A History of Our Homestead - What I learned
The short version of what could be a really long post is that it took us several moves before we learned that we technically could’ve been doing a lot more - homesteading-wise - in each of our homes.
First, we could’ve gotten chickens MUCH earlier. Even as far back as when we lived in a neighborhood! Not being confident in that possibility is one of my biggest homesteading regrets.
Second, we could’ve been creative with fencing at every one of our more rural properties! We simply didn’t know what we didn’t know until we were put in a position of having to know it in order to actually continue homesteading.
Third, the lack of structures (barns, run-ins, etc) at previous homes really was something we allowed to hamper our plans and progress. At our most recent home, we had a small barn that prompted us to feel confident in moving forward with homesteading. But when we moved to our current rental property, there were no fixed shelters, and we quickly learned that we don’t need expensive, permanent structures to house our animals. While one of our neighbors has graciously allowed us the use of their unused horse barn for our goats, we've discovered some affordable and simple ways to provide shelter for our cows and for our goats, if we were to need to.
All of this above to say that there’s so much more we could’ve been doing all along, but just didn’t really have anyone to tell us that more was possible. And we hope to help you see that if we can do this….so can you!
