A History of Our Homestead - Part 2

So, back in 2017, when we moved into the house that originated the idea for this series, I was adamant. It was. for. good. I halfway joked that I wanted my children to get tears in their eyes, someday, when they were setting up the estate sale once their beloved parents had passed on. That’s how fine I was, settling in that house. We were coming off of about 3 years of ridiculous crazy and this was home. It had several acres…the home was a good size…we were set.

Until we weren’t.

Except, of course, it’s not that simple. We really were fine with our location. The property was large enough, although it was very wooded and over the years, our dreams expanded to actual homesteading. This property didn’t lend itself to livestock or any sort of growing food on a large scale. We couldn’t clear it because that would cause erosion problems. But we were fine. We couldn’t see any reason to uproot everyone.

Enter: my friend, Laurie, who was one of my best friends. We both homeschooled our children and, in doing so, spent lots of time together. She became very acquainted with our hopes and dreams of expanding our little garden into something bigger. And she knew how much I had wanted to expand our chicken flock into a dream of larger livestock. But that’s really it. Dreams.

Nathan and I came up with ideas to make our property work for what we wanted…and that was that.  We didn’t know what we were doing, really, so we felt like we didn’t have options (hang tight and I’ll address those halted dreams in a future post)

Then, in early 2021, Laurie went through the process of getting her realtor’s license. She passed her state exam on the FIRST try and I was SO proud of her!

One day, I jokingly mentioned that if she came across anything that would check off some of our boxes (I didn’t even have to tell her what the boxes were; I knew she’d know if she came across such a property), to let me know and she could sell our house. I wasn’t too serious….and just left it at that.
